Smart Cities will undergo a major re-conceptualization in 2019. Smartphones and Internet of things have become a normal part in people’s life, therefore a fresh approach, refocusing on the technology is a sine qua non, especially to those technologies who always comes into the need of people.
A smart city can resolve any problem in a jiffy and brings heaven to the earth while making it a secure and comfortable place to live.
So, let’s focus on the current Smart City trends we can see this year.
Not just cities but also communities
Smart cities will be focusing more on communities this year. American Planning Association (APA) conference is going to be a crucial topic in 2019 which is about community planning. APA is making a strenuous effort to resolve the tough situations faced by vulnerable communities.
Route to a more intuitive process
An intuitive process is being adopted including a high usage of machine learning to collect and evaluate a community’s data . The reason behind it is that, as a there is a growth in smart city movement and high tech machines are being used, it has become very difficult to deal with, therefore an intuitive process is being adopted to tackle this problem. We can already see a shift from traditional networking to more intuitive, intent-based networking, Cisco DNA for Cities as well as SD (Software defined) -WAN.
A shift from CapEx to OpEx
A high number of communities that will be folding smart city projects will move from capital expenditure to operational expenditure. As result of which, a subscription-based services will be an advantage as they will allow communities to move out from CapEx to OpEx to cut costs and also helps in reducing staffing needs.
Usage of low-cost IoT tech for Public Safety
As IOT and WIFI is present everywhere, we can see the employment of community-wide networks of sensors and cameras for public safety. New Orleans which is one of favourite destinations in America, has already deployed IOT for the security of its citizens. With the IR 829, the city is capable of securing public safety through real time video (24/7) which are fixed in the Bourbon Street.
An increase in transparency
By using tools like Cisco Webex or Cisco Jabber, the government can aid its citizens and also its staffs to attend meetings virtually or to communicate with their colleagues anytime and anywhere. Additionally, the government can build confidence and cooperation that goes hand in hand among its employees and citizens due to these modern technologies.
Last but not the least, how we forget about the Greenfield Smart Renewable Cities which comprises of the employment of renewables that help in achieving the smart city goals (see figure 3- Deloitte analysis).
The question that arises is that how the re-conceptualization of smart cities are going to be in 2019?. Well, we can say that technology is just the ‘enabler’ but mankind proves more powerful in a smart city. Also, the more human-centric we will make our smart cities, the more successful it will be.
